Summer Reading Program Preview 2018

Summer is here! Summer is here! I am so excited to be at LPL for another Summer Reading Program. Of course you can always check out our Summer Reading Catalog and our Summer Reading Events, but there’s SOOO much happening, it’s pretty easy to gaze right over some stunners. So here are some events to plop onto your calendar and put on your DO NOT MISS List.

For Littles (0-4)
Littles have got it going on this summer! Not only do we have our already fabulous line up of storytimes for our youngest visitors, but we’ve added a brand new event where everyone can get down and shake their booties: Dance Party for Littles. We’re offering it two times this summer in June and July! Worried about the summer crush at storytimes? We have several storytimes at night, plus any 9:30am session is bound to be a tiny bit smaller.

For Younger Ones (5-6)
One of our long time programs, Kidapalooza is bringing in some new and exciting programming! Create a tasty snack with Harvesters in Kids in the Kitchen: Snack Attack and Donna Jo from the Arts Center will teach us some moves from Giraffes Can’t Dance in Dance Off. In fact a lot of our old favorites are making a splash in Summer Reading this year, Lego Club and Magic Tree House Club are both going strong this summer with meetings in both June and July. If you haven’t had a chance to check them out, come learn about Jack and Annie and build some awesome LEGO creations!

For Older Kids (7-11)
For older kids we have two long time programs that are bringing their A game. Tween Club, which runs year round, is crafting out of the box with Manhole Cover Screen Printing in June and Building a Box Fort in July. Exploratorium, the weekly summer reading camp for older kids, is hosting Rauly Duenas from the Arts Center to teach kids hip hop moves in School of Rock! while also learning about DJing. Want to learn Spanish Say it in Espanol is our 4 week long Spanish class, taught by native speakers. With fun activities and engaging lessons, it’s the perfect class to introduce your older kid to learning another language. Seriously cool. All of these programs require online registration, so sign up before slots are all gone!

For Everyone
Bookworms & Waterbugs is one of my favorite programs of the summer. Haven’t been before? Here’s the inside scoop: stories + pool = free fun for all. We’ve got two of these magical events one in June and one in July. Thursday Performances are always awesome, but I can’t get over how amazing it is to have LIVE ANIMALS IN THE LIBRARY. Topeka Zoo will be here for two performances times at 11AM and 2PM! Did you love Game of Gnomes last year? We’re bringing back the same concept but with a twist in Name that Tune. Hunt around Lawrence’s parks all summer long to find musical notes. You’ll piece them together to create a tune and we will give you prizes. Stay tuned for more info, the hunt begins on June 4.

Extra Super Bonus
Worried about the summer slide? We have an extra special event on Wednesdays, where your child can study with rock star Jake on all sorts of subjects: Summer Tutoring. Sessions are 30 minutes and you need to register online, but it should be all around excellent.

Are you coming to Free Lunch this summer? Well we’ve got a last minute surprise which is that Parks & Rec is bringing an inflatable obstacle course 3 different dates! There’s one in June, July and August. So don’t miss out on all of the bounciness.
