The Program
1000 Books Before Kindergarten is one of those library programs that is exactly what it sounds like. You and your child read 1000 books before they reach kindergarten. That’s the whole thing.
Our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program started at Lawrence Public Library in 2018. Families have been completing the challenge and winning prizes for over 8 years now. But in case it has fallen off your radar, we wanted bring it to the forefront of your mind with a glow-up.
The Pace
The best part of 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is that you can take as long (or short) as you like. You can knock them all out quickly before your kiddo turns 1 year old or take a leisurely stroll, logging books along the way, and make sure they’re finished before kindergarten.
The Prizes
And you’ll earn prizes along the way!
300 Books — Canvas Book Bag (to carry all your books!)
600 Books — Reading Buddy (small stuffie to snuggle while reading)
1,000 Books — Hardcover Treasury Book, Bumper Sticker
You can still use a paper log to track your books, which you can pick up from the library. Or you can now log your reading digitally with the Beanstack app. Here’s a quick video on how to get signed up on Beanstack.
Whether you want to go fast or slow, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is here to help you and your family get started reading together. Reading together has so many amazing outcomes that one of our children's librarians wrote a whole blog about it. Ready to get started now? We've got so many lists!
We've created some wonderful mega lists of books for you and your little one to explore as part of our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program! Ask at the desk if you'd like to read 1000 books to your little one for prizes and more! Each of these lists feature 100 titles chosen with care by our youth services team! We hope you love exploring these books and please ask us if we can help you find more titles to help you on your 1BBK journey! Learn more about 1BBK at: lplks.org/1000-books
