What is Junior Author Camp?

Looking to write, read, and share your creativity with others? We’ve got you covered! Junior Author Camp is an annual programming series for kids and teens. It features authors for both in-person and virtual visits who work in all different mediums. The event has previously featured incredible award-winning talent like Gail Carson Levine, Christina Soontornvat, and Pedro Martin as well as the powerhouse local talent we have here in Lawrence!

This year, we’re mixing things up and adding in additional writing-exclusive sessions so you can hone your skills between author visits. In contrast to previous years, this year will feature two months of programming between February and March.

Who are our guests?

This year, the Youth Services Department is so excited to tell you all about our Junior Author Camp lineup.

Ellen Oh is a middle-grade author, young adult author, and founding member of We Need Diverse books. Her books range in genre from horror to fantasy to speculative fiction. She has also edited and lent her writing to several short-story collections. She will be visiting virtually on February 4th and will talk about the ins and outs of fiction writing.

Spirit Hunters

Jose Pimienta is a graphic novelist who writes both middle-grade and young adult. Their most recent book, Halfway to Somewhere, is all about a young girl who deals with a major adjustment when she moves from Mexico to right here in Lawrence, Kansas. Pimienta spoke with Senior Collection Development Librarian Dan Coleman over on the LPL Blog last year. They will be presenting virtually on February 11th about graphic novel writing.

Halfway to Somewhere

Amanda Sellet is a Junior Author Camp alumni and a writer of fiction for teens and adults. A Lawrence local, Amanda writes contemporary stories for a bookish audience who loves the classics. Her newest novel, Flirting with Murder, is a young adult cozy murder mystery with a meet-cute romance. She will be at LPL in person on March 11th to talk about mystery writing and her newest novel.

Belittled Women
