Top Digital Book and Movie Resources for Students

We want to help keep your kiddos reading! If you've never used the library's digital collection or are unfamiliar with all we offer, here's a comprehensive list of the digital lending sources we have from LPL and the State Library of Kansas. Read on for info on how to get a card and a breakdown of each service offered.

Library cards

  • If you don’t have a card, sign up for one here. After filling out the form, come to the library to provide ID and proof of address to check out materials. 
  • We can also set you up with a State of Kansas library card that will give access to digital collections through the state, just email accounts@lplks.org .

Digital Book and Movies from LPL

Hoopla

  • What’s available: Backlist eBooks, audiobooks, and comics
  • Works on:  Computers, tablets, and smartphones
  • You can have: 5 checkouts a month, 3 weeks per checkout for ebooks and audiobooks
  • Kids Mode: a setting designed to make the discoverability of children’s content easier for parents and kids. All content in this mode has been deemed suitable (by Hoopla) for children up to 12 years of age. 
  • Immediate access, no waiting for titles, no need to place holds
  • App is available for android or iPhone users. 
  • Titles are also searchable in the library catalog
     

Kanopy

  • What’s available:  26,000+ Indie/Documentary Films plus digital storytime for kids
  • Works on:  Computers, tablets, Smart TVs, and smartphones
  • You can have: 10 checkouts per month, unlimited checkouts for Kanopy Kids
  • Phone and TV apps are available
  • Kanopy Kids      
    • Kanopy Kids features a collection of films and TV series that inspire and inform, helping children develop social-emotional skills and reinforcing valuable learning topics, such as history, science, and new languages. 
    • Kanopy Kids has a diverse selection of educational and entertaining content that ranges across Movies, TV Series, Animated Storybooks, Live Action, and Animated favorites.
    • Curated for ages 2-8. Kanopy also has parental control features.

Overdrive / Libby / Sora

  • What’s available: Latest eBooks and eAudiobooks, including Kindle titles
  • Works on:  Computers, tablets, and smartphones
  • You can have: 10 checkouts at a time, 2-3 weeks per checkout
  • Libby: Overdrive’s app for android or iPhone users. 
  • Items check out to one person at a time. Holds can be placed
  • Can set preferences to kids or teen only materials
  • Titles are also searchable in the library catalog
  • Bonus: Students with school-issued iPads can add their LPL card to their Sora app and have instant access to LPL’s catalog of kid and teen eBooks.

  • What’s available: Thematically paired fiction and nonfiction titles designed to bridge learning-to-read and reading-to-learn from Scholastic.
  • Works on: computers, smartphones, tablets. Read completely in your browser. 
  • You can have: unlimited access
  • Includes animated classic picture books, word matching, fun quizzes, and links to more thematic resources.
  • Best for beginning and emerging readers.
     

Britannica E-Stax

  • What’s available: Nonfiction eBooks for PreK-12 students. 
  • Works on: computers, smartphones, tablets. Can be read online or downloaded with additional software.

  • What’s available: bestsellers and books and audiobooks for adults, teens, and kids 
  • Works on: computers, tablets, and smartphones. Requires additional software download. 
  • Requires a State Library card

  • What’s available: Wide variety of fiction, nonfiction, and curated self-published books for all ages.
  • Works on: computers, smartphones, and tablets. Requires additional software.
  • Requires a State Library card 

 

 

Freading

  • What’s available: Large variety of fiction & nonfiction eBooks, including graphic novels, for all ages.
  • Works on: computers, tablets, smartphones
  • You can have: 5 checkouts per week.
  • All books on Freading have unlimited copies, so there are no holds.  
  • Use your LPL library card to log in. 

 

Tumble Books

  • What’s available: TumbleBookLibrary is a curated database of children’s e-books, with over 1100 titles for grades K-6, including animated, talking picture books, read-along chapter books, graphic novels, National Geographic videos, non-fiction books, playlists, as well as books in Spanish and French.
  • Works on: computers, tablets, and smartphones via browser
  • You can have: unlimited access. The collection is available online around the clock. No downloads, no waiting!
